18. Measurements of bar codes on thin plastic sheets can show varying results in unfavourable
cases. First of all, it must be ensured that the plastic sheet is absolutely flat in front of the
device. The pressure plates facilitate this, as described in the following chapter. When
measurements are done on packaging, e.g. potato chip bags, the ideal condition of
“absolutely flat” should be adhered as far as possible. Since this is difficult to do, REA
Elektronik GmbH recommends always to measure plastic sheets as patterns flatly on a
defined underlay (according to standard: black, 5% reflection maximum). Transparent or
partially transparent plastic sheets that have a white printed field behind the bar code can
also show varying measurement results if these plastic sheets
are measured on a white
underlay. This is due to the fact that the distance between the plastic sheet and underlay is
never the same and that, the greater the distance, the more influence the distance has on
the parameter of modulation. In principle, the effect is caused by the fact that a bright
underground reflects light and that the described plastic sheets let this reflected light pass
through.
5.2 Using the pressure plates
The REA ScanCheck 3n can be used with extension panels with a range of cut-out widths as
accessories. For this purpose, it is necessary to remove the standard trapezoidal base panel
installed and replace this with one of the extension panels.
