Maintenance Utilities
2.2
Tape Backup/Restore Utilities
Tape backups on tape cartridges provide a means of restoring hard disk data should the hard disk become
damaged or if data is lost. Tape backups should be performed regularly. The VU-ACD/100 automa-
tically performs a complete backup to tape nightly. Use this facility to perform manual tape backups or
for file recovery in the event of hard disk failure.
To access this facility, type
3
and press
Enter
from the ACD MIS Maintenance Menu to select Tape
Backup/Restore Utilities. The ACD MIS Tape Backup/Restore Utility Menu consists of four numbered
functions:
1. Complete System Backup
– This function backs up all VU-ACD/100 Management
Information System (MIS) files to tape. To restore files backed up with this process, use
the Complete System Restore option or the Extract Specific Files From Tape option.
2. Complete System Restore
– in the event of a hard disk crash, this function copies and over-
writes all VU-ACD/100 files from a tape cartridge to the hard disk. You must use the back-
up tape from the automatic backup performed nightly or from a Complete System Backup.
?
Prior to performing a complete system restore, re-install VU-ACD/100 software
without starting the ACD MIS. Perform the Complete System Restore as described
in Section 2.2.1 and start the VU-ACD/100, by following the procedures contained
in Section 2.1.3.
3. List of Contents on Tape
– Use this option to view the names, sizes, and access rights of
files stored on a UNIX tape cartridge.
4. Extract Specific Files from Tape
– Use this option to restore files backed up using the
Complete System Backup option. The Extract Specific Files option is recommended for
restoring specific files, e.g., VU-ACD/100 executables, site configuration files, etc. This
option should not be used to restore report data. To restore report data, use the Retrieve
Report Data From Tape option described in the VU-ACD/100 System Administration Guide.
QIC and DAT tape drives supported by SCO OpenServer Release 5 and VU-ACD/100 ACD MIS utilize
the tape cartridge sizes listed below. For backup operations always use the maximum cartridge size
indicated by “
R/W
”.

You will be unable to perform a Complete System Backup or List Contents on Tape if
another user has the process locked out. A lockout occurs when another user is storing,
retrieving or removing data, or when a Full Backup, Auto backup or system shutdown is in
progress. A “lockout” message will appear on your screen.
