Using the Bar Code Reader
The FOMA terminal can use its built-in camera to scan JAN codes and QR codes. The scanned data can then be
used for displaying, copying and pasting text, it can be stored in the Phonebook or as a bookmark, or used in
functions such as Phone To/AV Phone To, Mail To, Web To and i-
α
ppli To. You can even use the FOMA terminal’s
camera to scan images and melody files to play and save.
● The FOMA terminal can store up to 5 scanned codes.
● Hold the FOMA terminal firmly to ensure that it does not shake during scanning. You can reduce shaking by holding the
bottom of the FOMA terminal with your hand or by placing the FOMA terminal on a magazine.
● It may be difficult to read in a dark place. If so, please turn the light on and perform the reading.
● For quicker and easier access to the bar code reader, add its desktop icon to the stand-by display.

JAN codes and QR codes
● What is a JAN code?
This is a bar code that uses vertical lines (bars) of varying thicknesses and spacings to
represent numbers. The FOMA terminal can scan both 8-digit (JAN8) and 13-digit (JAN13) bar
codes.
* When the JAN code on the left is read with the FOMA terminal, “4942857113068” appears.
● What is a QR code?
QR codes are a type of two-dimensional code that uses horizontal and vertical patterns to
represent numbers, letters, kanji characters, kana characters and pictographs. Some QR codes
handle images or melody data, and some QR codes are split among 2 or more QR codes.
* When the QR code on the left is read with the FOMA terminal, “

Focus the image and center the JAN code or QR code so that it falls entirely inside the
recognition field.
Use the rear camera lens approximately more than 9 cm away from the barcode. If the lens
is closer than this, it will be difficult to read. Adjust with the zoom when the barcode is small.
