Measurement Modes
Q-NRG models can measure REE (Resting Energy Expenditure) using three modes:
• VENTILATOR (ventilated subjects).
•
CANOPY (spontaneously breathing subjects).
• MASK (spontaneously breathing subjects).
VENTILATOR
A single use flowmeter (Flow-REE), placed in series in the patient circuit, allows the in-line measurement of
ventilatory parameters (Vt, RF, and VE). Two single use sampling lines (shown in the image below) are connected to
the filter and inspiratory limb of the patient circuit (through the FiO2 adapter if a Luer port is not available), these
sampling lines transport samples of gases (exhaled and inhaled) for the measurement of O2 (oxygen) and CO2
(carbon dioxide) concentrations. Further calculations allow determination of VO2 and VCO2. The antibacterial filter
placed in series with the patient prevents device contamination.
CANOPY
The oxygen a subject consumes combined with the carbon dioxide which is produced are diluted by a known and
measured flow of ambient air pumped through a hood. The measurement of this flow in addition to the fractional
concentrations of O2 and CO2 allows for the calculation of VO2 and VCO2. This technique has been standardized and
is considered the gold standard for REE measurement in spontaneously breathing subjects. The antibacterial filter
placed in series with the hose prevents device contamination.
