Acquisition
Automatic acquisition mode
The simplest way to quickly use the MTS
e
to detect any faults on your fiber optic
link is to make use of the automatic acquisition function that is provided. This
function allows you to automatically configure the MTS
e
to use the optimum
acquisition parameters (pulsewidth and range) for the link under test with
respect to the selected time.
Once the acquisition has been made the automatic measurement mode displays
all the detected events on the acquired trace. With the trace displayed you then
use the powerful analysis functions to quickly identify any faults on the fiber.
Only two measurement configuration parameters need to be set : the laser
wavelength (if a multi-wavelength module is used) and the required maximum
acquisition time.
Note
In automatic mode, all the parameters being reconfigured, overlay
and marker functions are not possible when the acquisition is per-
formed.
Setting up the automatic acquisition configuration
In the
OTDR TEST SETUP
window:
1.
Select the
Laser
wavelength with the
Acquisition:Laser
option.
2.
Select the
Auto
(Automatic) mode with the
Acquisition:Mode
option.
3.
Select the acquisition period (5 seconds to 10 minutes) with the
Acquisition:Acq. Time
option.
Acquisition in auto-configuration mode
When you press the press the
START STOP
key, the MTS
e
first executes an
automatic configuration phase which is designed to allow the instrument to
automatically configure the optimum parameters to be used for the acquisition.
To do this, the MTS
e
executes a three phase automatic configuration process:
•
Phase 1: Gives an indication of the quality of the connection (refer to
"Connection quality indicator" on page 5-7).
•
Phase 2: Chooses the best range to see all of the fiber under test.
•
Phase 3: Chooses the pulsewidth required to accurately qualify the link i.e.
gives the best resolution possible for a given dynamic range.
Note
The pulsewidth depends on the maximum acquisition time selected.
•
Phase 4 : averaging is realized. Averaged time and number of averages are
displayed. At the end of the acquisition time, the automatic measurement is
performed.
