Setting the correct thread tension
14.2.1
Checking the thread tension
If you have the feeling that the stitches are too loose or untidy, this is most likely
due to threading the upper or lower thread incorrectly.
Check the thread tension as follows:
•
Set the zigzag program
•
Stitch width 2.5 ; Stitch length 2.5
•
Always sew the zigzag stitch on a cotton tea towel folded double.
The thread tension is set properly when the dots can be seen on the wrong
(under) side of the fabric at the outer points of the zigzag stitch. In our example,
we have selected the colour “blue” for the upper thread and “red” for the lower
thread.
If the zigzag stitch (shown in red) is consistent on the wrong side of the fabric,
you will see a tiny blue dot of the upper thread at each outer
point of the zigzag stitch.
Zigzag stitch: left – from below | right – from above
Should the sewing machine skip stitches on your jersey fabric, you should use a
size 90 Super Stretch needle (HAx1SP) from W6 WERTARBEIT in conjunction
with a stretch pattern.
Is your fabric bunching up? Then place stabiliser under the fabric and/or reduce
the stitch width.
14.2.2
Setting the upper thread tension
You can set the upper thread tension on the
‹dial›
. For normal use, set the upper
thread tension to AUTO for the most commonly used stitches and fabrics. As a
rule, you will obtain good results with this setting.
