Patches / Patchwork
Using a pattern
11.8.1
Step 1
The individual pieces of fabric are sewn next to each other or on top of each
other on a larger surface according to a pre-planned pattern. There are numerous
techniques for sewing the pieces together using a sewing machine. The same
applies to any technique: the W6 sewing machines’ 1/4 inch patchwork quilting
foot neatly and precisely sews the 1⁄4 inch seam (6.3 millimetre) that is typically
used for patchwork.

Step 2
In the case of blocks sewn together in a patchwork, the seam allowance is
usually pressed on the darker side of the piece being sewn together. The side
next to the seam, on which no seam allowance is pressed, is called the darker
side. This creates a so-called ditch. When quilting, you sew in the ditch, in other
words, on the side without a seam allowance. The W6 sewing machine’s
patchwork ditch foot (special accessory) reduces the amount of work involved in
sewing in the ditch. It has an exceptionally long guide that prevents slipping when
sewing. This is ideal for sewing in the ditch.

Step 3
In order to achieve decorative effects when creating a patchwork, the materials
used must differ in terms of their type, nature and colour. Use the correct stitch to
sew the parts together. Use the standard foot for this stitch.
And here’s how:
•
Sew the patchwork pieces together using straight stitches.
•
Always press the seam allowance on the dark side. Ironing helps in this
instance.
