Stabilizer Balsa Filler
Later, you will be applying skins over
and under the stab and these areas will
need some support. You will add some
scrap balsa in these areas and sand
them down.
1. First, sand the top of the tail
assembly’s ply side walls at a slight
bevel as shown. Add masking tape to
the fin to protect it.
2. Add scrap balsa sticks between the
fin and the side wall slightly higher than
the level of the fin spar bulkhead and
the level of the fin post. Install the stab.
When adding balsa to the other side of
the ply sidewall, tape down a spacer
(about .040”) over the stab root. Glue
balsa blocks to the outside of the ply
side wall with their bottom against the
spacer (do not glue balsa to the spacer)
– this will allow the stab to be installed
without interference from the balsa.
3. Remove the stab and sand the
blocks so that they extend the fuselage
curvature at the fin spar bulkhead back
to the fin post at which point the
curvature is almost flat.
With the stab re-installed, you should be
able to see a gap above the stab. This
will make insertion of the stab much
easier.
4. Do the same task for the gap below
the bottom of the stab and the bottom of
the tail assembly. Remember, the
purpose of these filler blocks is to
proving a backing for the skin, rather
than securing the stab.
