Applying Fuselage Skins
Overview:
The process of trimming, positioning
and gluing the fuselage skins involve
following a specific order. By following
each successive step in the process you
will achieve properly aligned skins for a
realistic appearance. During this
process you will be placing reference
marks on the skins, rough and finish
trimming skins as well as adding some
details to the foam before gluing.
Bottom Skin:
1. Before adding the bottom skin you
have an opportunity to locate an
antenna tube (not supplied), if desired.
We recommend this as it allows for easy
removal of the receiver. To do this, first
mark a line on the bottom left corner
behind the wing saddle all the way to
the fin post.
2. Use a dremel with a cutting bit to
route a channel the depth of the tube
you will use. Make the channel deeper
near the wing saddle so the tube is
below the saddle. Later, you will route a
cavity for the receiver in this area of the
saddle.
3. Install the tube into the channel – no
glue is needed if it is a tight fit. You can
add some foam to the channel near the
saddle to help retain the tube and
reinforce this area.
4. Next, you will be adding a ply plate to
support a tail skid (applied later). This
scale feature is recommended to avoid
damaging the ventral fins due to
excessive rotation angle.
Find the 1/8” thick ply plate measuring 1
½” x 2” and draw a line ¾” from one
end. This line will be located at the fin
post. Center the plate at the bottom of
the fuse as shown and trace around its
edges. Use a router to make a recess
for the plate. Use CA to glue in the
plate. Make a recess to the fuse TE to
also accept the plate but do not glue the
plate to the fuse TE. Install the fuse TE.
