Note: If you use another engine, you will
first have to determine the correct stand-
off distance from the firewall/mounting
plate that will get the lower edge of a
spinner back plate located 16.5” from
the wing saddle’s LE. Then you can
adjust the cowl’s final position.
Mounting the Cowl
Before you can skin the fuse you first
need to mount the cowl so that you can
later position it and then remove it from
the fuse. This initial mounting process
involves cutting cowl in two (top and
bottom halves) then installing cowl
fasteners.
We’ve provided rare earth magnets to
secure the cowl. This makes installation
and removal of the cowl very easy, but
more than a convenience, this form of
fastening the cowl will contribute to a
more durable model. When impact
forces act on the cowl, the magnets will
let go whereas a more traditional screw
fastener will rip out and/or cause the
cowl to rip at the screw hole. Using
magnets will reduce your repair work
after a crash…we know this from
experience.
1. Mark the panel lines on the cowl that
separate the top from the bottom half.
Apply several layers of masking tape to
protect the cowl if you plan to use a
Dremel cut off wheel to cut the cowl.
Note:
We will later be covering the
cutting of the upper cowl into a front and
back section and making the back
section into functional clam shell
hatches. For now, it is best to leave the
upper cowl as one piece.
You can use a variety of cut off wheels
such as fiberglass reinforced, steel
toothed or diamond wheel as shown
below. When you cut along panel lines
you want the material removed by the
cutter to be as minimal as possible so
try to use a thin cut off wheel.
