27. To attach the doors to the outer
flanges you can use either screws or
glue. Because the full-size aircraft’s
clam shell doors do not indicate
numerous screws uses to attach this
edge of the door you may want to use
glue. If using CA, first mask the piano
hinge with masking tape as shown
below. Make sure tape is applied
slightly on to the outer flange to prevent
CA from getting into the hinge. Also
apply waxed paper under the flange.
28. Sand the inside of the door where it
meets the hinge. Apply CA to the outer
flange then position the door in place
making sure it is aligned properly with
the front and bottom cowls. Hold the
door’s edge firmly against the hinge and
its flange until the CA cures. Run an X-
acto blade between the door and the
hinge to cut and remove the masking
tape. Repeat Step 27 for the other side.
29. Once both doors are glued to the
hinge flange you can apply a set of
magnets to the inside of the doors to
hold them together when opened fully.
The strip between the doors (over the
flanges) can be made from .020”
polycarbonate or G-10. To secure it you
can use small magnets or screws (not
supplied) with small wood stand-offs.
The full-size clam shell doors do not
open as much as shown in the picture
above but this does allow for easy
access to your gear. Below is a picture
of the full-size doors in the open position
should you desire to replicate their scale
open position.
Now that the cowls can be correctly
positioned on the fuse and easily
removed, you can begin to apply the
fuse skins.
