the baggage door or, in our case, the
RC gear access door. You will use this
scale feature to locate and access your
radio switch and pneumatic gear. Begin
by using a sanding drum to remove the
foam fillet at the base of the pre-routed
recess.
2. Using ¼” thick balsa sticks (1/2”
wide) make a frame around the opening
and use CA to glue in the frame.
3. Sand the frame even with the side of
the fuse.
4. On the left side skin shown below,
we have highlighted the rivets that
surround the door outline. Use a
straight edge to draw the door’s straight
edges and a circle template to draw the
corner radii. The lines should be drawn
about 1/16” in from the edge of the
rivets.
5. Rough cut the left side skin so that
you maximize the useable material at
the top, rear and front. Leave the area
that extends over the wing saddle as it
is easier to trim it after it is glued and
cured.
There is a row of rivets near the bottom,
aft of the wing saddle area – trim that
area 1/8” below the rivets. This edge
will overlap onto the bottom skin’s sides
so make the cut straight. Next you will
cut out the door.
6. We recommend that you tape the
side skin to a table so that it will not
move when you cut out the door. Take
your time when you cut the door from
the side skin as you are creating both
the door skin and the door frame in the
side skin. Use a new X-acto blade and
a straight edge for the straight lines and
carefully follow the radii by hand or
following a circle template.
