Once cured, sand the balsa TE to match
the stab.
Assembling the Elevator
1. Glue in balsa blocks into the LE of
the elevators just as you did on the
stabs.
Remember that the hinge spacing is 4”,
7.5” and 14” from the root. Make sure
that the balsa blocks are glued in solidly
into the elevator but be careful not to
warp the elevator while gluing. Since
the elevator is relatively weak at this
point, you will glue on the plywood sub
LE next and then, when the elevator is
stiffer, you should sand down the balsa
blocks.
2. Mark 2” out from the root end of the
ply sub LE. When gluing this piece to
the elevator, DO NOT apply epoxy
within 2” from the root – you will be
adding a ply doubler there later.
Add epoxy to the sub LE and then place
the elevator over the sub LE as shown
in the picture below and let it cure this
way. You can add a piece of tape to
hold down the root end but don’t apply
tape to the rest of the elevator (like you
did over the stab’s TE) as this could
easily warp the elevator. Just make
sure the elevator’s LE is aligned with the
sub LE and its TE is straight.
3. After the sub LE is cured onto the
elevator, mark a line on the elevator 2”
out from the root and 1/8” back from the
sub LE. Use an X-acto knife to remove
the foam in this area.
Add CA into this slot, then insert the 1/8”
ply doubler. Hold the elevator firmly
against the doubler while the glue sets.
Sand the balsa blocks, sub LE and
doubler to match the elevator.
