6. If you will be adding 3D trim tab
detail, (similar to the optional elevator
detail trim tab), then make your trim tab
hinge slots in the rudder skins. We will
show you how to make this scale effect
here with the rudder. The slot is
roughly 1/8” wide (see full scale photos
for exact location).
7. Remove the film from the inside
surface of the rudder skins. Remember
you will likely need to remove the film
from the corrugations individually. Sand
the inside surface adjacent to the slot.
Use scrap plastic to line both sides of
the slot – this provides the three-
dimensional relief. We used .030”
styrene strips. CA the strips in place
setting them back slightly from the slot
edges. Cut out a piece of scrap .010”
polycarbonate wide enough to span
across the strips and long enough to
cover the entire slot. Remember to
remove the film from the strip. Apply CA
to the tops of the styrene strips and
place the polycarbonate strip on top.
8. Position the skin over the rudder and
outline where the slot plastic contacts
the foam. You will need to route this
area down about 1/16”. We recommend
using a dremel with a router attachment
to control the depth of cut.
9. Check the slot’s fit in the recess.
Draw a line and trim the skins’ LE so
that it extends about ¼” over the balsa
LE. The curved rudder LE skin will
overlap this edge. Remove any balsa
directly under a corrugation (both sides
of the rudder) so the skins can press
against the foam.
