5.5.4 Connection of IP 68 protection class
1
Max. flooding height: 5 m
(16.4 ft)
Figure 34: Flooding height
For sensors with IP 68 degree of protection, the maximum
flooding height is 5 m (16.4 ft). The supplied signal cable fulfills all
the submersion requirements.
The sensor is type-tested in accordance with EN 60529. Test
conditions: 14 days at a flooding height of 5 m (16.4 ft).
Connection
NOTE
Potentially adverse effects on the IP 68 protection class.
The sensor's IP 68 protection class may be adversely affected
by damage to the signal cable.
The sheathing of the signal cable must not be damaged.
1. Use the supplied cable to connect the sensor and the
transmitter.
2. Connect the signal cable in the terminal box of the sensor.
3. Route the cable from the terminal box to above the maximum
flooding height of 5 m (16.4 ft).
4. Tighten the cable gland.
5. Carefully seal the terminal box. Make sure the gasket for the
cover is seated properly.
Note
As an option, the sensor can be ordered with the signal cable
already connected and a sealed terminal box.
Sealing the terminal box
A special two-component sealing compound can be ordered
separately (part number: 00707192) for sealing the terminal box
subsequently at the site. Sealing is only possible if the sensor is
installed horizontally. Compliance with the following information is
required when realizing the task.
CAUTION
Health hazard!
The two-component sealing compound is toxic. Ensure that all
suitable protective measures have been taken.
Compliance with the information on the material safety data
sheet for the two-component sealing compound is required
prior to commencing preparatory work.
Hazard-relevant information:
• R20: Harmful by inhalation.
• R36/37/38: Irritating to eyes, respiratory system and
skin.
• R42/43: May cause sensitization by inhalation and skin
contact.
Safety advice:
• S23: Do not inhale gas/fumes/vapor/aerosols.
• S24: Avoid contact with skin.
• S37: Wear suitable protective gloves.
• S63: In case of accident by inhalation: remove casualty
to fresh air and keep at rest.
Preparation
• Seal only after installation procedures have been completed
to avoid the ingress of moisture. Ensure that all the
connections are correctly seated and tight beforehand.
• Do not overfill the terminal box – keep the sealing compound
away from the o-ring and gasket / groove (see Figure 35).
• Prevent the two-component sealing compound from entering
the cable conduit when the NPT ½“ is installed (if applicable).
