Removing the system board
To remove the system board, complete the following steps:
1. Read the safety information that begins on page vii and “Installation guidelines”
on page 73.
2. Turn off the computer and all attached devices; then, disconnect all external
cables and power cords.
3. Remove the side cover (see “Removing the side cover” on page 75).
4. Remove the hard disk drive bracket, if one is installed (see “Removing the
hard disk drive bracket” on page 95).
Note: It might be helpful to lay the computer on its left side for the remainder
of this procedure.
5. Remove the air baffle from the microprocessor fan assembly (see “Removing
the microprocessor fan assembly” on page 81).
Important: When disconnecting cables, note the cable routing and connector
labels for use during installation.
6. Remove the drive cage from the computer (see Figure 23 on page 89):
a. Loosen the thumbscrew at the rear of the drive cage.
b. Slide the drive cage to the rear to disengage it from the upper clips and lift
the cage out of the computer.
Note: You might have to disconnect the power cables from the drives
before you lift the cage all the way out of the computer.
7. Disconnect the cables.
Note: Installed adapters might have to be removed before some cables can
be disconnected.
8. Remove any installed adapters (see “Removing an adapter” on page 85).
9. Remove the mini-PCI adapter, if one is installed (see “Removing a mini-PCI
adapter” on page 106).
10. Remove the microprocessor and heat sink (see “Removing the microprocessor
and heat sink” on page 112).
11. Remove the memory modules (see “Removing a DIMM” on page 89).
12. Remove the battery (see “Removing the battery” on page 92).
13. Remove the seven screws that secure the system board (see Figure 54 on
page 122).
