Use the Add New Hardware program (located in the Windows Control
Panel) to reinstall the device driver. Not all device drivers can be
reinstalled using this program. If the device subfolder contains a file
with an .INF extension, you can use the Add New Hardware program.
In the Add New Hardware program, when prompted for the device driver
you want to install, click Have Disk and Browse. Then select the
appropriate device driver file from the Aptiva
Product Recovery and
Diagnostics CD.
-or-
In the device subfolder, look for a SETUP.EXE file. Double-click the
SETUP.EXE file and follow the instructions on the screen.
Recovering factory-installed programs and files
Your Aptiva PC comes with programs and files installed on the hard disk.
These preinstalled programs and files are also included on the
Product
Recovery and Diagnostics CD. In some cases, the original programs and
files on the hard disk can become damaged. If this happens, you will need
to reinstall them on the hard disk.
You might also install programs from other sources and create your own
files. When you install programs, the installation process might change
certain configuration files that the operating system uses. Be sure to make
regular backup copies of these configuration files and any files you create.
When you make backup copies of the operating system configuration files,
copy the original directory structure. When you reinstall the files, you must
put them into the original directory structure. If you do not, the computer
might not work correctly.
Note: Some models come with the ConfigSafe program, which runs in the
background. ConfigSafe automatically takes a “snapshot” of your
configuration files. Before doing a full recovery, you might want to
start ConfigSafe and restore system files to see if an earlier snapshot
might fix your problem.
To recover all factory-installed system and program files, follow these steps
to perform a full-recovery operation:
Attention: All personal data in the computer will be lost. If possible, back
up important files before starting the procedure.
1. Insert the
Product Recovery and Diagnostics disc into your CD or DVD
drive.
2. Make sure you do not have a diskette, CD, or DVD in any other drive.
3. Shut down and turn off your computer.
