Important
1
Lubricate the drive end, com m utator, bushings
or bearings and arm ature shaft with Delco-
Remy Lubricant No. 1960954 or equivalent.
2. On starters with bronze bearings and oil wicks,
soak the wicks and bearing surfaces with non
detergent SAE #20 oil. Do not drill, ream or
machine sintered bronze bearings in any way.
Oil from the wick will bleed through the highly
porous bearing to lubricate the shaft.
3. Lubricate the shaft underneath the overrunning
clutch assem bly with a silicone grease, such as
General Electric CG321, or Dow Dom ing 33
medium, or equivalent. The overrunning clutch
does not require lubrication.
Drive assembly (32) on the arm ature shaft.
• Slide the drive assem bly on the shaft with the
pinion gear toward the shaft end.
Stop collar (39) on the shaft with the cupped end away
from the pinion gear.
Retainer ring (37) on the shaft (figure 16).
• Place the ring on the end of the shaft.
• With a wood block on the top of the ring, force
the ring onto the shaft with a light ham m er blow.
• Slide the ring down and into the shaft groove.
Do not distort the retainer ring when installing it.
Stop collar with the retainer ring (figure 17).
• Place a suitable washer over the retainer ring
e nd and s q u e e z e th e c o lla r and w a s h e r
together.
• Remove the washer.
Thrust collar (39) or pinion stop washer (34) with the
flat side away from the pinion.
• Apply sealing com pound to the solenoid flange,
just under the solenoid.
• S pread the brush a s s e m b lie s using a tool
socket slightly larger in diam eter than the com
mutator.
• Slide the field fram e over the arm ature. The
brush retaining tool socket will slide out as the
field frame bottoms.
• Install the w asher, end fram e and the two
through bolts.
Brake washer (34) on the com m utator end of the
arm ature shaft (SD-300).
Solenoid (3) and the solenoid return spring (5) with
the drive end housing (31).
Solenoid retaining screws.
Drive assem bly collar to the shift lever fingers.
Arm ature shaft into the drive end bearing.
Field fram e to the drive end assembly.
Field coil strap to the solenoid m otor terminal.
PINION CLEARANCE CHECK
The pinion clearance cannot be adjusted but should be
checked after reassem bly of the motor. Im proper clearance
is an indication of worn parts.

The check pinion clearance, perform the follow ing steps
(figures 18 and 19).
1. Disconnect the motor field connector from the sole
noid motor term inal and
insulate it carefully.
2. Connect a battery of the same voltage as the solenoid
from the solenoid switch term inal to the solenoid
frame.
