• If the drive pinion turns roughly or slips in the
cranking direction, replace the com plete over­
running clutch assembly.
17. Solenoid for grounds.
• Connect a 100 volt test lamp between the sole­
noid case and each term inal, one term inal at a
time.
— If the test lam p lights, the te rm ina l is
grounded. If the solenoid is grounded,
replace the solenoid.
18. Hold-in winding and pull-in winding.
• With all the leads disconnected from the sole­
noid, make the test connections as shown in
figure 15.

than 15 seconds. The c u rre n t d ra w w ill d e c rease
as the w in d in g te m p e ra tu re increases.
• Turn the switch on and adjust the carbon pile to
lower the battery voltage to the value shown in
“ S pecifications” at the end of this section.
• Note the ampere reading; a high reading indi­
cates a shorted or grounded winding, and a low
reading indicates excessive resistance.
— The w in d in g s resistance can be read
directly using a digital ohm m eter that can
measure tenths of an ohm.
— The coil resistance can be determ ined by
d iv id in g th e v o lta g e by th e c u rr e n t
(am peres) values listed in “ S p e c ific a ­
tio ns” at the end of this section.

1. New solenoid disc assem bly if needed.
2. End cover to the solenoid body.
3. Screws attaching the end cover.
4. Nuts from the “ S ” term inal and the motor terminal.

2. Screws into the brush holders.
3. Brush holders into the brush supports (62).
