Solution
Sample weight chosen too high
The sample weight should not exceed 50 mg, otherwise
the metered acid volume (400 µl) is not enough to fully
digest the carbonate or the acid volume cannot fully wet
the sample.
Sample not distributed evenly across the entire boat
length
The sample must be evenly distributed to allow the
sample to be completely wetted with acid.
Acid strength too weak
(long tailing of the measuring graph, measuring graph
does not return to baseline)
If the sample contains very stable carbonates (FeCO
3
) in
high quantities, the digestion speed with 40% H
3
PO
4
is
too slow. In this case
use a stronger acid instead (e.g. 25% HCl).

Sample matrix is hydrophobic
If it is difficult to wet the sample with acid, it is helpful
to cover the sample with annealed quartz sand to im-
prove the effect of the acid.
Sometimes hydrochloric acid wets better than phos-
phoric acid.
