High availability and load balancing using clusters
Changing cluster settings
Changing global cluster configurations
You can modify settings for hot standby, load balancing, and weight. Global cluster settings affect all
cluster members. While an individual setting, such as weight, might apply to an individual cluster
member, that value affects all cluster members.
Before changing the global cluster configuration you should be aware of the result of using hot standby
mode compared to the result of using load balancing.
If potential overload is anticipated, you should enable load balancing rather than hot standby mode. If
load balancing is enabled, the load will be shared between the configured cluster members. If hot
standby is enabled, when the active node fails because of overload, the passive node that is configured
for failover will also fail because it will get the whole overload.
Prerequisites
None.
To change the global cluster configuration
1
In the SGMI, in the left pane, under Cluster, click
Cluster Members
.
2
In the right pane, in the Cluster Member window, do one of the following:
■
To place the cluster in hot standby mode, check
Hot standby
.
If you change this option, it requires a reboot after you save and activate changes.
■
To remove the cluster from hot standby mode, uncheck
Hot standby
.
If you have change this option, it requires a reboot after you save and activate changes.
3
In the Load balancing algorithm drop-down list, select a load-balancing algorithm.
4
To modify the cluster weight, in the Weight column, double-click the cluster member you want to
change.
5
In the Cluster Members Properties dialog box, do the following:
■
In the Weight text box, type the load weight rating to be used for the selected cluster member.
■
In the Caption text box, type a brief description of this global cluster configuration.
6
Optionally, on the Description tab, type a more detailed description than you typed in the Caption
text box.
7
Optionally, do one of the following:
■
To save your configuration now and activate later, on the toolbar, click
Save
.
■
To activate your configuration now, on the toolbar, click
Activate
.
When prompted to save your changes, click
Yes
.
8
If the Hot Standby option is changed, after activating the changes, you must reboot all cluster
members for the new configuration to take effect.
