Bolus dose rate reduction
The increased delivery rate of a bolus dose may
trigger an occlusion alarm (depending on the
occlusion limit settings in the pump and the
resistance in the line). If this occurs, the bolus
time is automatically increased by 30%, thus
reducing the bolus rate. The bolus rate continues
to be reduced and the bolus time increased until
resistance is below the set occlusion limit.
If the rate reductions cannot succeed in delivering
the bolus without occlusion occurring (if the bolus
rate reduces below the infusion rate, or the bolus
time increases past the maximum bolus time), the
bolus is eventually cancelled.
There could be a variety of reasons for occlusions to
occur, including (but not limited to) the occlusion
limit in use, fluid/medication viscosity, tubing size,
the patient’s infusion site setup, etc.

The pump continues to monitor the
infusion and may reduce the rate multiple
times (only the first alarm produces an
audible tone - if the first alarm is silenced,
additional rate reductions will not cause an
audible tone to sound, however the amber
(yellow) LED and the alarm message will
display and can be cleared by pressing

• If the rate reductions succeed in
allowing the bolus to be delivered, the
new, reduced rate (and bolus time)
will become the set rate for boluses in
that infusion. In other words, when a
bolus is

initiated during the same infusion, or if
the
Recall Last Settings
feature is
used (see page 56), the reduced rate
will continue to be applied. If desired,
use the
CHG Bolus
key on the
Begin
Bolus Delivery? screen to alter the
rate (for example, decrease bolus Dose
and/or increase bolus Time).
2. If, however, the bolus rate reduces below
the infusion rate, or the bolus time increases
CANCEL
– stops the bolus and returns to the normal delivery
rate and screen.
