Loading dose rate reduction
The increased delivery rate of a loading dose
may trigger an occlusion alarm (depending on
the occlusion limit settings in the pump and
the resistance in the line). If this occurs, the
loading time is automatically increased by 30%,
thus reducing the loading rate. The loading rate
continues to be reduced and the loading time
increased until resistance is below the set occlusion
limit.
If the rate reductions cannot succeed in delivering
the loading dose without occlusion occurring (if
the loading rate reduces below the infusion rate,
or the time increases past the maximum loading
time), the loading dose is eventually cancelled.
There could be a variety of reasons for occlusions
to occur, including (but not limited to) the
occlusion limit in use, fluid/medication viscosity,
tubing size, the patient’s infusion site setup, etc.

The pump continues to monitor the
infusion and may reduce the rate multiple
times (only the first alarm produces an
audible tone - if the first alarm is silenced,
additional rate reductions will not cause an
audible tone to sound, however the amber
(yellow) LED and the alarm message will
display and can be cleared by pressing

• If the rate reductions succeed in
allowing the loading dose to be
delivered, the new, reduced rate (and
loading time) will become the set rate
for the loading dose in that infusion.
In other words, when a loading dose is

(if delivery is stopped for
any reason while the loading dose is
being delivered), or if the Recall Last
Settings
feature is used (see page
56), the reduced rate will continue to
be applied. See item 2 on the next page
for instructions on altering the reduced
rate, if desired.
