Starting and Stopping the Engine

Starting the engine
1. Press the footbrake.
2. Vehicles with manual transmission: Fully depress
the clutch pedal and hold.
3. Move gearshift lever into neutral or move selector
lever to the
P or N position.
4. Do not press the accelerator pedal.
5. Turn the vehicle key to ignition lock position 2 .
Do not use the starter for more than
approx. 10 seconds.
The starting process is carried out and completed
automatically as soon as ignition key position
2
(start engine) is reached.

If necessary, wait for around 10 seconds and then
repeat the starting process. First turn back the
vehicle key to ignition lock position
0 (initial
position).
Do not warm up the engine when stationary. Drive
off immediately. Avoid high engine speeds and
full throttle until the engine has reached
operating temperature.
Switching off the engine
1. Stop the vehicle.
2. Turn the vehicle key to ignition lock position 0 .

When exiting the vehicle remove the vehicle key,
apply the electric parking brake and, in the case of
vehicles with PDK, place the selector lever in
position
P or, in the case of vehicles with manual
transmission, engage first gear or reverse.
NOTICE
An unattended vehicle with a running engine is
potentially hazardous. If warning lights come on to
indicate improper operation, no one would be present
to observe the light and turn off the engine.

Never leave the engine idling unattended.
WARNING
Absence of Steering and
Brake Power Assistance
The steering assistance and brake booster are only
operative when the engine is running. Consequently,
much greater force needs to be applied for steering
and braking when the engine is stopped.
e
Only switch off the ignition once the vehicle has
come to a standstill.
