Repeat steps 4 and 5 until both echoes line up. All 10 echoes should then line up with a
graticule line. If they do, the instrument is calibrated for 1.0 to 10.0 inches. If not, repeat
calibration.

After calibration, you are ready to start testing for flaws. If the calibration block surfaces
are similar to the test material, you can proceed. If the surface (inner or outer) is rougher
or curved, you will need to adjust the Gain to acquire signals back up to about 70%.
Rough outer surfaces will also cause echoes after the initial pulse which restricts the
resolution of thin surfaces. Always make sure that the display signals are clear and “make
sense” before proceeding with the test.
