Even th e ABS can n o t prevent
th e natural laws of physics
from acting on th e vehicle.
T h e ABS can n o t p revent
accid en ts, including tho se
resulting fro m excessive
speed in turns, follow ing
ano th er v e h ic le too closely, or
aquaplaning. Only a safe,
attentive, and skillful driver
can p revent accid en ts. The
capabilities of an ABS
equipped car m ust n ever be
exploited in a reckless or
dan g ero us m a n n e r w hich
could jeo p a rd ize th e u se r’s
safety or th e safety of others.
Warning!
The ABS prevents the w heels from
locking up above a ve h icle speed
of app ro xim a tely 2 m ph (3 k m /h )
ind ep en d en t of road surface co n
ditions. It is necessary, how ever,
that the ve hicle speed reaches at
least 5 m ph (8 k m /h ) before co m
m encing to brake.
At the instant one of the w heels is
about to lock up, a s lig h t pulsation
can be felt in the brake pedal,
indicating that the ABS is in the
regulating m ode.
On slipp ery road surfaces, the
ABS w ill respond even with only
sligh t brake pedal pressure. The
pulsating brake pedal can be an
indication of hazardous road
c o nd itio ns and fu nctio ns as a
rem inder to take extra care w hile
driving.
Antilock Brake System (ABS)
The ABS w arning lam p in the
instru m e nt clu ste r com es on with
the key in steering lock position 2
and should go out w hen the
e ng in e is running.
If the charging voltage falls below
10 volts, the w arning lam p com es
on and the ABS is sw itched off.
W hen the voltage is above this
va lu e again, the w arning lam p
should go out and the ABS is
operational.
If the ABS w arning lam p does not
go out or com es on w hile driving,
it indicates that the ABS has de
tected a m alfu nctio n and has
sw itched off. In this case, the
brake system fu nctio ns in the
usual m anner, but w itho ut a ntilock
a ssistance.
Have the system checked at your
authorized M ercedes-B enz dealer
as soon as possible.
Note:
To ale rt follow ing ve hicles to
slipp ery road c o nd itio ns you
d iscover, operate yo ur hazard
w arning fla she rs as appropriate.
