body in case of m ajor
frontal im pact.
• Im properly positioned seat
belts do not provide m axi
mum protection and may
cause serious injuries in
case of an accident.
• N ever w e ar th e s ho u ld er
belt under your arm , against
your neck or o ff your shoul
der. In a crash, you r body
would m ove too far forw ard.
That w ould in crease the
ch a n ce of head and neck
injuries. The belt w ould also
apply too m uch fo rce to the
ribs, w hich could severely
injure internal organs such
as your liver or spleen.
• Position th e lap belt as low
as possible on you r hips
and not acro ss th e
abd o m en . If th e belt is
positioned across your
abd o m en , it could cause
serio u s in ju ries in a crash.
• Each seat belt should never
be used fo r m ore than one
person at a tim e. Do not
fasten a seat belt around a
person and objects.
• Belts should not be worn
tw isted . In a crash, you
w o u ld n ’t have th e full width
of th e belt to tak e im pact
fo rce s. T h e tw isted belt
against your body could
cau se injuries.
• P reg n an t w o m en should
also use a la p -sh ou lder belt.
T h e lap belt portion should
be positioned as low as
possible on th e hips to
avoid any possible p ressure
on th e abdom en.

m ust be seated in an in fan t
or child restrain t system ,
w h ich is properly secured
by a lap belt or lap belt
portion of a lap-shoulder
belt. C hildren could be en
d an g ered in an a cc id en t if
th e ir child restraints are not
p ro p erly secured in the
vehicle.
• R ear-facin g child restraints
m ust not be used in the
fro n t seat. T h ey could be
struck by th e airbag w hen it
in flates in a crash. If this
happens, a child in th e
restrain t could be seriously
injured.
• A cco rd in g to a ccid en t sta
tistics, ch ild ren are safer
w h en properly restrain ed in
th e rear seating positions
than in th e fro n t seating
positions.
• C hildren too big fo r child
restrain t system s should
ride in rear seats using reg
ular seat belts. Position
sh o u ld er belt across chest
and shoulder, not fac e or
n eck. A booster seat may
be n ec es s ary to achieve
proper belt positioning.
