Product Description
SYNCOM™ SDH equipment is designed with a cost effective, modular
architecture, enabling easy system upgrading and reconfiguration by simply adding
or replacing the modular units. All cards have their own built-in power supplies and
adding or replacing a single module is simple and can be done while the system is
operating.
Most of the network element cards are fully interchangeable between the various
multiplexer types, providing a family of products that are completely compatible
with one another. Further module specifications can be found in Chapter 7 of the

2.1 Equipment Options
The
µ
SDM-1RD/
µ
SDM-1/
µ
SDM-1E is fully factory configured and does not
include any user-replaceable parts apart from the TEX expansion cards. Unlike other
SYNCOM™ products, all the
µ
SDM-1RD/
µ
SDM-1/
µ
SDM-1E hardware options are
pre-installed for each multiplexer configuration alternative.
There are three
µ
SDM-1 multiplexer models:
1. The
µ
SDM-1RD is the reduced version of the product. It supports up to eight
E1 tributaries and is non-expandable.
2. The
µ
SDM-1 is the standard multiplexer. It supports up to 21 E1 tributaries.
3. The
µ
SDM-1E module is upgradable from 21 E1 to 63 E1 tributary
interfaces via Tributary Expansion (TEX) cards. Adding a TEX card causes
no interruption to live network traffic and can be performed at any time.
TEX expansion cards can only be installed with
µ
SDM-1E multiplexers and include
interfaces for 2 Mbit/s expansion, 34 Mbit/s or 45 Mbit/s tributary support.
