11 Heat Quantity Measurement (HQM)
11.1 Overview of the HQM Option
When
FLUXUS
is equipped with the HQM option, the instrument operates with the
standard flow transducers, which are clamped to the outer pipewall (clamp-on
technique), and with two additional temperature sensors Pt100.
FLUXUS
establishes the quantity of heat by a method known as differential
measurement principle. This means that the instrument needs to measure the
process temperatures at the inlet and the outlet of the system together with the
flow. Subsequently, FLUXUS can calculate the heat flow by taking into account
the temperature difference between inlet and outlet, the flow at the outlet of the
system in conjunction with some other relevant properties of the medium (density
and specific heat capacity).
The coefficients, which the instrument needs to know in order to measure the heat
flow of various media, are pre-programmed into the flowmeter.
Attention!
The coefficients are determined so that the flow must always be measured at the outlet
of the system, i.e. the return flow.
In cases where the temperatures of inflow and/or outflow are known or are
constant during the whole measuring period, you may enter these fixed
temperatures manually into the instrument. In this situation, the temperature
sensors need not to be connected.
The use of surface temperature sensors allows the measurement of thermal
energy, transported through liquids, free of any pipeline intrusion.
