Defining Operating Parameters

When a remote ISX 5312/5314 has an alarm to report, the following events occur:

1. The ISX 5312/5314 does the normal processing for the T-1 line.

2. If the modem is connected to the CMS 400, the remote unit sends an alarm over

the modem to the CMS 400.

3. If the modem is not connected to the CMS 400, but the alarm is a Dial Condition

Event, the remote unit will dial the number stored in the ISX 5312/5314’s
memory.  If the modem link is established, the remote unit will send an ID
Notification and then the alarm.

The hang-up characteristics of an ISX 5312/5314 are as follows:

• The unit hangs up after a user-specified period of inactivity unless a hang-up

command is received from the CMS 400 first.  The hang-up command is
accomplished with a T7 command from the CMS 400, which can be sent over any
valid T7 path.  When the unit receives this command, it contacts the modem and
issues a hang-up sequence.

• A modem link can be terminated at any time from the front panel of the unit.

• Regardless of where the hang-up originated, an ID Notification is the first message

sent over the T-1 link if the unit is configured as a network management remote.

The characteristics of the modem link at the CMS 400 are as follows:

• You can configure the network in the usual manner, placing the ISX 5312/5314

units on whatever network path you desire.  In this way, you can dictate which
type of network connection is established initially:  a link through the T-1 or over
a Dial T7 path.

• If the CMS 400 receives an ID Notification for a unit that is attached to a different

channel, the CMS 400 switches that unit to the channel on which the ID
Notification was received.

• Duplicate alarms may be received from a T-1 link and a modem link, especially if

the T-1 line is intermittent.  If this occurs, the CMS 400 needs only to look at the
alarms received on the channel to which the unit is attached.  The alarms from the
other channel can be ignored.
