Defining Operating Parameters

Network Management System

The Network Management System submenu allows you to select Milgo’s proprietary
management protocol for management from a CMS 400 T7 manager.  Point-to-Point
Protocol (PPP), Serial Line Internet Protocol (SLIP), and Ethernet protocols are
available for SNMP management via a CMS 400 or generic SNMP manager.  Also
available is Console protocol for management from an ASCII terminal.  This submenu
also allows you to specify the NMS channel rate and the network terminal server
connection.

When T7 protocol is selected and the framing format is FAS or CRC-4, you may also
select a method for transporting T7 data via dial modems and a Public Switched
Telephone Network (PSTN) line and/or via a timeslot on either DS1 line.  Another
method of transporting T7 data is via the DTE ports.  This method is described in the
“T7 Mode” section in this chapter.  The Network Management System submenu contains
the following parameters:

 - Network Terminal Server

Note:

  The Protocol, Speed, and NTS parameters should not be changed from a remote

unit.  Changing these parameters results in terminating the remote session.

Protocol

The first NMS parameter that must be defined is the Protocol.  The available options are

T7

, 

CONS

 (Console), 

SLIP

, 

PPP

, and 

ENet

 (Ethernet).  The correct selection depends on

the type of device connected to the ISX 5312/5314.

Note

:  For central site models, this parameter setting applies only if the NMI port is set

for Network Management mode.  See “Setting Switches” in Chapter 2 for more
information.

Before you can select SLIP, PPP, or Ethernet, the ISX 5312/5314 must be configured as
follows:

• The T7 Modem Type parameter must be set to None.  If you attempt to enable

SLIP, PPP, or Ethernet with a modem attached, the screen displays the message:
