Using External Dial Backup Feature

Excalibur ISX 5312/5314 units equipped with one T-1 interface come with the External
Dial Backup feature.  This feature restores high-speed communications in the event of a
network outage.  When the T-1 line fails, the ISX 5312/5314 automatically switches to
an external backup device, such as an ISDN modem.

The following sections explain how to enable dial backup mode, configure its operating
parameters, and initiate dial backup connections.  Refer to “Connecting to External Dial
Backup Device” in Chapter 2 for cable connection instructions.

Enabling Dial Backup Mode

To enable the External Dial Backup feature, you must enter the Backup Mode submenu.
For the ISX 5312, DTE 1 is the dedicated port and DTE 2 is the dial backup port.  For
the ISX 5314, DTE 1 and DTE 3 are the dedicated ports and DTE 2 and DTE 4 are the
respective dial backup ports.  Therefore, before you can enter this submenu, the ISX
5312/5314 must be configured as follows:

• There must be no connections on DTE 2 or DTE 4.

• There must be no dedicated line DS0 channels specified on DTE 2

or DTE 4.
