CHAPTER
THREE
Drive Belt Check
A
worn or damaged drive belt reduces engine perfor-
mance and may fail during engine operation. With the en-
gine OFF, open and secure the shroud and remove the
drive belt cover. Check the drive belt
(Figure 11) for
cracks, fraying or unusual wear as described in Chapter
Ten.
Remove the drive belt once a month and cheek for ex-
cessive drive belt width and circumference wear. See
Chapter Ten for procedures and specifications.
Drive Belt Alignment and Height Adjustment
Check drive belt alignment and height as described in
Chapter Ten.
Primary and Secondary Sheave Inspection
At periodic intervals, disassemble and inspect the pri-
mary and secondary sheaves for excessive wear or dam-
age. Refer to Chapter Ten.
Brake Fluid Level Check
Turn the handlebars so the front master cylinder is
level.
2.
View
brake fluid level in the clear glass on the side
master cylinder
(A, Figure 12). The fluid level must
be no lower than the mark
on the side of the master
cylinder.
3. If the fluid level is lower than the mark, add DOT 4
brake fluid to the master cylinder as follows:
a. Wipe off the master cylinder cover with a clean rag.
b. Remove the screws holding the cover to the master
cylinder and remove the cover (C,
Figure
12) and
diaphragm.
Add DOT 4 brake fluid as required.
WARNING
Use DOT 4
fluid from a sealed con-
tainer. Other types may vaporize and cause
brake failure. Do not intermix
brands or types, as they may not be compati-
ble. Do not intermix a silicone
(DOT
5)
fluid as
it
can cause brake
damage leading to brake system fail-
ure.
CA UTION
Be careful not to spill
fluid on painted
or plated surfaces, as it will damage the sur-
face. Wash immediately
with soapy water
and thoroughly rinse
it off.
NOTE
was so
low that air entered
the hydraulic system, bleed the brakes as
described in Chapter Eleven.
4. Reinstall the diaphragm and cover. Tighten the cover
screws securely.
