Do
not
attempt to
turn the
setscrews using an Allen wrench or it will
damage the screw head.

bearing lock collar setscrews (Figure 37).
7. Remove the bearing (Figure 38).
8.
Remove the front axle.
Inspection
This section describes front axle inspection. Use a press
to disassemble and reassemble the front axle.
1. Check the bearing for roughness or excessive wear.
Also check the bearing seal for damage. Replace the bear-
ing if necessary.
2. Check the front axle for bending.
3.
Check the front axle splines for cracks or other dam-
age.
NOTE
When
the front axle is removed the collar on
the right end
may
remain
in the
seal.
Inspect the collar for wear where the seal lip contacts
the collar. Replace the collar if worn or damaged. Replace
the O-ring in the groove on the inside of the collar (Figure
32).
5.
Inspect the sprockets for excessive wear, cracks, dis-
tortion or other damage. Replace the sprockets as de-
scribed in this chapter.
6. If there is any doubt as to the condition of any part, re-
place it with a new one.
Sprocket Replacement
Use a press for this procedure.
1. Note the location of the arrow on each sprocket and
make a diagram to use as
a reference during assembly.
2. On models with lock collars located each end of the
front axle (Figure
loosen the lock collar setscrews
and remove each lock collar.
3.
Press off each wheel.
4.
Clean the front axle thoroughly. Remove all nicks with
a file.
Installation is the reverse of the preceding steps. Note
the following when installing the sprockets:
a. When installing the wheels onto the front axle, the
arrow on each sprocket must align with the same
flat on the axle. Refer to the diagram so the sprock-
ets are installed with the correct lug orientation.
b. Press the wheels onto the jackshaft to the dimen-
sions shown in the figures listed below. On models
equipped with lock collars, install them at the loca-
tions shown.
