NOTE
Step
7 describes crankshaft installation;
however, because of the number of separate
procedures required during, installation,
read all the procedures before installing
the
7 . Align the crankshaft with the upper case half and in-
stall the crankshaft into the upper case half
(Figure 74).
Note the following:
a. Rotate the crankshaft ball bearings to align their lo-
cating pins with the pin recesses in the upper crank-
case. See
Figure 75, typical.
Make sure the pinhole in the flywheel end roller
bearing
(A, Figure 71) aligns with
pin in the up-
per crankcase half
(Figure 76).
Make sure the
ring on the outer bearing
(Figure
73) engages both grooves in the upper and lower
crankcase halves. Reposition the ring if necessary.
d. Double check to make sure all the bearings and
seals are seated.
8. Rotate the crankshaft to make surc it turns freely.
Crankcase Assembly
1.
Lubricate the crankshaft gear and the bottom end bear-
ings with injection oil.
2.
If removed, install the two dowel pins in the crankcase.
3.
Make sure the crankcase mating surfaces are com-
pletely clean and dry.
4. Apply
No.
5 or equivalent to the entire mat-
ing surface of the crankcase half.
5. Position the lower crankcase half over the crankshaft
and the upper case half. Make surc the gear on the coolant
pump and oil injection pump driveshaft
(Figure
65)
meshes properly with the crankshaft center
(Figure
64).
6. Make sure the case halves close together before install-
ing the retaining screws. If a gap remains between the
cases, make sure the bearings and locating pins are prop-
erly positioned before continuing assembly. The crank-
case halves will not fit together until the bearings are
completely seated. Attempting to force the case halves to-
gether may damage the parts.
7. Install the crankcase bolts and tighten by hand.
8.
Tighten the inner crankcase bolts in the sequence
shown in
Figure 77. Tighten the bolts evenly in at least
two steps. Initially, tighten the bolts to 13

Then tighten the bolts to a final torque of

Check frequently while tightening the bolts to
make sure the crankshaft continues to turn freely.
I f the crankshaft becomes
to turn,
STOP and make sure the bearing locating
ring and dowel pins are aligned properly.
When correctly assembled,
the crankshaft
should turn freely.
9. Tighten the outer crankcase bolts in a crossing pattern.
Tighten the bolts evenly in at least two steps. Initially,
tighten the bolts to 13
