Chapter Thirteen
Front Suspension
and Steering
This chapter describes service to the skis, handlebar,
steering assembly, steering column and tie rods. Ski align-
ment is described in Chapter Three.
Refer to Chapter Three for information concerning
spring preload adjustments.
Table 1 and Table 2 are at the end of this chapter.
SKIS
The skis are equipped with wear bars, or
that aid
in turning the machine and protect the bottoms of the skis
from wear and damage caused by road crossings and bare
terrain. The bars are expendable and should be checked
for wear and damage at periodic intervals and replaced
when they are worn to the point
they no longer protect
the skis or aid in turning.
Refer to
Figure 1 or Figure 2 for this procedure.
1. Support the front
of
the machine so
skis are off the
ground.
2. Mark the skis left or right to reinstall them on their
original mounting side.
3. Remove the cotter pin
(Figure 3, typical) from the end
of the ski pivot bolt. Loosen and remove the nut, bolt and
ski.
4. If necessary, remove the ski stopper (1,
Figure 1 or
Figure 2).
If necessary on models so equipped, remove the ski
mounting bracket (7,
Figure 2).
6. Inspect the skis and hardware and replace as necessary.
On
and
models each ski is protected by a removable ski cover (8,
Figure 1). If the cover is damaged, replace the cover after
removing the
and retaining rivets.
8.
Installation is the reverse of the preceding steps. Ob-
serve the following:
a. Clean all the old grease from the pivot bolt and col-
lar.
When installing the skis, refer to the alignment
marks made before removal. Reinstall the skis on
the same side as originally installed.
c. Coat the nonthreaded part of the pivot bolt and col-
lar with a low temperature grease before installa-
tion.
Insert the pivot bolt through the ski and spindle with
the bolt head toward the outside.
Tighten the pivot bolt nut to 48
(35
f. Check that the ski pivots
up and down with slight
resistance.
