Protect eyes, skin and clothing. Ifelectrolyte
gets into your eyes, flush them thoroughly
with clean water andgetprompt medical at-
tention.
UTION
Be careful not to spill battery electrolyte on
painted or polished
The liquid is
highly corrosive and will damage the finish.
I f it is spilled, wash it
immediately with
soapy water and thoroughly rinse with
clean water.
5. Check the entire battery case for cracks. Replace the
battery if cracked.
6. Inspect the battery tray for corrosion and clean if nec-
essary with a solution of baking soda and water.
NOTE
Keep cleaning solution out of the battery
cells in Step
7
or the electrolyte level will se-
riously weaken.
7. Clean the top of the battery with a stiffbristle brush us-
ing a baking soda and water solution. Rinse the battery
case with clean water and wipe
dry
with a clean cloth or
paper towel.
8. Check the battery cable clamps for corrosion and
age. If corrosion is minor, clean the battery cable clamps
with a stiff wire brush. Replace excessively worn or dam-
aged cables.
NOTE
Do not overfill the
cells
in Step
9.
The electrolyte expands because of heat
from charging and will overflow i f the level
is above the upper level line.
9. Remove the caps from the battery cells and check the
electrolyte level. Add distilled water,
if necessary, to bring
the level within the upper and lower level lines on the bat-
tery case
(Figure 1).
10. Place the battery in the battery tray.

Reconnect the positive battery cable, then the nega-
tive cable.
CA UTION
Make sure the
cables are connected
to their proper terminals. Connecting the
battery
reverses the polarity and
damages the
WARNING
installing the battery, make sure the
vent tube is not pinched.
A
pinched or
kinked tube allows high pressure to accumu-
late in the battery
and
causes the battery to
explode.
I f the tube is pinched or
damaged, install a new tube.
12. Tighten the battery connections and coat with petro-
leum jelly or a light mineral grease.
13. Reconnect the battery hold down straps.
Testing
Use a hydrometer with numbered graduations from
1
to 1.300 to check battery condition. To use the hy-
drometer, squeeze the rubber ball, insert the tip into the
cell and release the ball
(Figure
2).
NOTE
Do not attempt to test a battery with a hy-
drometer immediately
adding water to
the cells.
the battery for
15-20 min-
utes so the water and electrolyte mix thor-
oughly.
Draw enough electrolyte to float the weighted float in-
side the hydrometer. When using a
sated hydrometer, release the electrolyte and repeat this
process several times to make sure the thermometer has
adjusted to the electrolyte temperature before taking the
reading.
