Starter Motor
Never operate the starter motor continuously for more
than
5
seconds. Allow the motor cool for at least 15 sec-
onds before operating it again.
If the starter motor does not
turn over, check the battery
and all connecting wiring for loose or corroded connec-
tions.
If
this does not solve the problem refer to Chapter
Two.

as described in this chapter.
2. Mark the drive housing, frame and end cap to aid dur-
ing reassembly.
3.
Loosen the two throughbolts (A,
Figure 15). Then re-
move the bolts and washers.
4. Remove the end cap
Figure 15).
5. Remove the washers installed between the end cap and
the armature
(Figure 16).
NOTE
Step 6 describes removing the pinion gear
assembly. However thepinion gear does not
require removal unless
it is damaged or re-
quires replacement. The clip (Figure 17) se-
curing the pinion gear assembly may be
difficult to remove. Have an assistant on
hand to help with
its removal and purchase
a new
clip from a
dealership before
disassembling the starter motor.
6. If necessary, remove the pinion gear as follows:
a. Support the drive housing in a vise so the armature
is positioned vertically.
See
Figure 17. Place a wrench over the pinion stop-
per and lightly tap the wrench downward to uncover
the clip.
c. Hold the clip with locking pliers as shown in
Figure
18. Then pry the clip open with a screwdriver.
Remove the clip, pinion stopper, spring and washer.
Before removing the pinion gear, check the clip
groove for burrs that could damage the gear,
Smooth the metal surface with a file.
f. Remove the pinion gear.
g. Remove the washer from the armature shaft (14,
