Connect an ohmmeter between the white and black
wire terminals from the charge coil (Figure 13).
4. Compare the reading to the specification in Table 2. If
the reading is not within specifications, replace the stator
assembly as described in Chapter Six.

Reattach the connector.
6. Close the shroud.
LIGHTING SYSTEM
The following tests determine the condition of the light-
ing coil in the stator.
problem exists in the lighting cir-
cuit, make sure to check the bulbs, switches and wiring as
well.
A.C. Lighting Circuit Output Test
Connect an inductive tachometer to one of the spark
plug leads.
2. Locate the headlight connector (Figure 14) and unplug
it.
3.
Switch a voltmeter to the
scale.
4. Connect the red voltmeter lead to the yellow connector
and
the black voltmeter lead to the black
tor terminal (Figure 15).
NOTE
After starting the engine in Step
5, release
the parking brake.
Running
the engine with
the parking brake applied may overheat the
brake disc.
5. Start the engine and gradually increase engine
to
3000
rpm.
6. Compare the reading to the specification in Table 3. If
the reading is not within specifications, perform the
Lighting
Coil
Resistance Test
in this chapter.
Lighting Coil Resistance Test
The lighting coil is located in the stator.
1. Open the shroud.
2.
Disconnect the rectangular six-wire connector located
near the
box.
3. Connect
an
ohmmeter between the yellow and black
wire terminals from the lighting coil (Figure 16).
Compare the reading to the specification in Table
3. If
the reading is not within specifications, replace the stator
assembly as described in Chapter Six.
5.
Reattach the connector.
6.
Close the shroud.

TEST
Voltage Regulator
Test procedures are not available for the voltage regula-
tor. If the AC Lighting Circuit Output Test and the
Lighting Coil Resistance Test tested correctly, replace the
voltage regulator. Refer to Chapter Six.
ELECTRIC STARTING SYSTEM
Description
Some models are equipped with an electric starter mo-
tor. The motor is mounted
on the front of the
engine. When battery current is supplied to the starter mo-
tor, its pinion gear is thrust forward to engage the teeth on
the engine flywheel.

The electric starting system requires a fully charged
battery to provide the large amount of current required to
