This chapter describes complete service procedures for
the chaincase, jackshaft and front axle.

equipped with a reverse gear.

mendations.

1. Open the shroud.
2. Place a suitable container beneath the snowmobile un-
der the chaincase drain bolt
(Figure
2).
Remove the oil
drain bolt and allow the oil to
from the chaincase.
3. Remove the bolts securing the chaincase cover (Fig-
ure 3) to the chaincase. Remove the cover and gasket.
4. Wipe up any oil that drains from
chaincase.

Loosen the chain adjuster locknut and loosen the chain
adjuster bolt

Loosen the adjuster until the
chain is completely loose.
6. Remove the chain tensioner

7. Have an assistant apply the hydraulic brake. Loosen
the drive sprocket nut (A,
Figure
5)
and the driven
sprocket bolt

Remove the drive sprocket nut (A,
Figure 5) and
washer.
9.
Remove the driven sprocket bolt (B,
Figure
5)
and
washer.
10. Remove the chain and sprockets as an assembly.
11. Remove the spacers from the jackshaft and drive
shaft
(Figure 6).

Check the drive and driven sprockets for cracks, deep
scoring, excessive wear or tooth damage. Check the
splines for the
abnormal conditions.
3.
Check the chain for cracks, excessive wear or pin
breakage.
4. If the sprockets and/or chain are excessively worn or
damaged, replace all three components as a set.
5. Check the chain tensioner for wear and damage. Also
replace the chain tensioner
if
the chain and sprockets are
replaced.
6. Remove the sanp rings and disassemble the chain
tensioner as shown
