Removal
Refer to Figure 8.
1.
Open the shroud.

Place a suitable container under the chaincase drain
bolt (Figure 2). Remove the oil drain bolt and allow the

4. Remove the retaining nut at the forward end of the up-
per shift rod (Figure

the shift arm and move the shift rod out of the way.

cover to the chaincase. Remove the cover and gasket.

9. Loosen the chain tensioner locknut and loosen the

and front axle (D).
19. If necessary, remove the washer, shaft holder (A, Fig-
ure 18) and shaft (B).
Inspection
to Table 1 and Table 2 for specifications.
Clean all components thoroughly in solvent.
2. Check the drive and driven sprockets for cracks, deep
scoring, excessive wear or tooth damage. Check the
splines for the same abnormal conditions.
3. Check the chain for cracks, excessive wear or pin
breakage.
4.
If the sprockets chain are excessively worn or
damaged, replace all three components as a set.
5.
Check the chain tensioner for wear and damage. Also
replace the chain tensioner if replacing chain and
sprockets.
6.
Remove the snap rings and disassemble the chain
tensioner as shown Figure 8. Check the needle bearing
and replace if necessary. Reverse to assemble the
tensioner.
7. Inspect the gears and shafts for damage or excessive
wear. Inspect the bearings and replace if necessary.
8.
Inspect the bearing (A, Figure 19) in the driven
sprocket and replace if necessary.
9. Inspect the shift fork (Figure 20) in the chaincase
cover.
10.
Inspect the bearing in the chaincase cover. When in-
stalling a new bearing, apply force only to the outer race
of the bearing.
11. Inspect the engagement dogs and notches on the
driven sprocket Figure reverse driven gearshift
coupler (Figure 21) and reverse gears (Figure 22).
To disassemble the reverse driven gear, proceed as
follows:
a. Push against the shift coupler (A, Figure 21) to ex-
pose the snap ring @),
b. Remove the snap ring (B, Figure 21) and separate
the shift coupler from the gear.
Remove
springs from the reverse driven gear.
Reassemble by reversing the disassembly
dure.
Installation
Refer to Figure 8.
1 If removed, install the shaft (B, Figure 18) and shaft
holder (A).
2.
Install the spacers onto the jackshaft (C, Figure 17)
and front axle (D). Note that the spacer on the front axle
is stepped. Install the spacer so the large diameter is
out.
3. Install the washer (B, Figure 17) and countergear (A).
4. Install the chain and sprockets. Install the driven
sprocket so the lugs (B, Figure 19) are out.
5 . Install the washer Figure 16) and splined shaft (A)
into the driven sprocket.
6. Install the reverse driven gear (Figure 15).
