Chapter 6. Removing and replacing components
This topic provides information about removing and replacing a customer replaceable unit or a field
replaceable unit.
Note:
The information and procedures in this documentation apply to both the 4-socket and the 8-socket
configurations of the server, unless otherwise specified. Most of the illustrations in the documentation uses
the 4-socket configuration of the server.
Replaceable components are of three types:
•
Tier 1 customer replaceable unit (CRU):
Replacement of Tier 1 CRUs is your responsibility. If a Lenovo
approved warranty service provider installs a Tier 1 CRU at your request, you will be charged for the
installation.
•
Tier 2 customer replaceable unit (CRU):
You may install a Tier 2 CRU yourself or request a Lenovo
approved warranty service provider to install it, at no additional charge, under the type of warranty service
that is designated for your server.
•
Field replaceable unit (FRU):
FRUs must be installed only by Trained service technicians.
See Chapter 5 “Parts listing, System x3850 X6 and x3950 X6 Type 6241” on page 201 to determine whether
a component is a Tier 1 CRU, Tier 2 CRU, or FRU that must be replaced only by a trained service technician.

assistance” on page 1951.
Returning a device or component

If you are instructed to return a device or component, follow all packaging instructions, and use any
packaging materials for shipping that are supplied to you.
