4.3.4 SMPTE Pattern Density Justification

Out of the 16 gray scale levels on the SMPTE
pattern, use the densitometer to measure the
density of either gray scale at the top of the
inside of the film (where there are density
patches and notches).
- Measure 16 locations (0 through 16) within the
same gray scale.
The SMPTE pattern density is measured to determine whether or not the DRYPRO 793 output density
is normal.
There are two methods of judging density dependent upon film size.

Check the differences in density between the
measured and standard values.
- The print is judged to be normal if values measured
at each point fall within the criteria for the
maximum and minimum values.
For standard, maximum and minimum values, refer
to Chart-A.
With the exception of values shown with
asterisks (*), values within the st/-0.05D
are judged to be normal.

Check film for scratches, line or density inconsistencies using a light table.
In cases where printed flat patterns show abnormalities, appropriate measures
should be taken as detailed in the chapter dealing with resolving problems in the
service manual.

Check to ensure that the densitometer to be
used is adjusted to zero.

In cases where there are points that fall outside
the prescribed range, the following checks
should be carried out.
1.Was calibration carried out before test printing?

If any of the supply trays have not been
calibrated, calibration should be executed and
test printing/density judgement carried out
again.
2.Was the internal densitometer calibration result
normal?
→
If not normal, densitometer calibration should
be re-executed and test printing/density
judgement carried out again.

SMPTE patterns
printed on 14X17,
14X14 and 11X14 sizes
contain four patterns on
one sheet.
The densitometer used for calibration of the internal densitometer must be used
for density measurement.
