Chapter 27: Controller redundancy
Function changes
The system selects the most apt controller as the active default and performs a function change if a prob-
lem is detected and lasts for 1 minute. If you force a function change, the system stays in the new function
indefinitely if there are no network issues. If you force the less apt controller to become the active, the
function change takes place, but the system switches back automatically after 10 minutes of inactivity.
When no trouble is present, the controllers see each other on the Ethernet network, software versions are
similar, and you don’t force a function change, the controller on the EDGE automation network is the
active default.
Process question
Decision
1
As the stand-by, do I see the active over the
Ethernet?
No→
function change
2
As the stand-by, do I see more modules on my Edge
network than the active?
Yes→
function change
3
As the stand-by, do I have a higher version of soft-
ware than the active?
Yes→
function change
4
Did the user ask for a switch over?
Yes→
function change
The active/standby icon and function change button gives information on the system state. This icon dis-
plays the two controllers at all times. The controller displayed as being in front is the one you are standing
in front of.
Installing an EDGE redundant system with a software update
Before You Begin
The following must be true:
• There is one controller already functioning, and connected to the EDGE automation network (Com-
munication line). It will be the main and default active controller
• There is a second controller installed. This will be the backup controller to be added to the system
• The Safety communication bus is connected and is correctly wired from the Expansion Boxes to the
backup controller as displayed in the EDGE wiring diagram
1. Power off the backup controller (unplug the power terminal blocks).
2. Insert the USB memory stick into the Main Controller (the one that is connected to the EDGE auto-
mation network or communication line).
3. Update the Main Controller (previously powered on).
4. Detect the modules on the Main Controller - make sure all modules are detected and updated :
a. Navigate to the Module detection page to make sure the firmware update of the modules is com-
plete and all modules are seen on the EDGE automation network. This can take up to 7 minutes.
b. Make sure the automation bus LED is green on all Expansion Boxes.
5. Power off the Main Controller (unplug the power terminal blocks).
6. Connect the EDGE Safety network (communication line) to the backup controller.
7. Power on the backup controller (plug the power terminal blocks).
8. Insert the USB memory stick into the backup controller.
