Brief explanation of ISO/IEC CD 13871 and BONDING
A13.1.1
BONDING
BONDING is the abbreviation for “Bandwidth on Demand Interoperabilty
Group”, a consortium, founded in 1991 to work out a specification for the in-
teroperation of inverse multiplexers (channel aggregation).
The resulting BONDING specification has in the meantime been approved
(with slight modifications) by the ISO as ISO/IEC CD 13871 (CD = committee
draft). This ISO specification is compatible with BONDING.
A13.1.2
ISO/IEC CD 13871
ISO/IEC CD 13871, also known as “Digital Channel Aggregation“, is divided
into 5 different operating modes (transparent mode, and modes 0, 1, 2 and 3).
It specifies procedures for
– the division of an n*64kbit/s (56kbit/s) data stream into n individual 64kbit/s
(56kbit/s) data streams (and vice-versa)
– the automatic synchronisation of up to 63 channels (56kbit/s or 64kbit/s)
– the compensation of relative transit time differences between the individual
channels (delay equalisation)
– the exchange of information on common operating modes, transmission
rate and the transmission of telephone numbers
– error safety
– the dynamic data rate switching during a connection (only modes 2/3)
– loopback (only modes 2/3)
ISO/IEC CD 13871 therefore mainly deals with automatic exchange of call
numbers, the division of a data stream to be transmitted into n channels for
transmission via ISDN, for example, and then subsequent rearrangement to
the original order (transparent n*64kbit/s or n*56kbit/s data stream on the
transmit and receive side).
This splitting up and rearranging is called inverse multiplexing.
