Annotation Layers
– Individual annotations can be grouped in an Annotation Layer. These
can then be made visible or invisible as a group. This function enables creating an
Annotation Layer as well as adding or removing annotations from the Layer.
Outline Segment Measurements
– Select to view measurements of each line segment of
outlines drawn in the scene. (See section 8.1.4 for drawing outlines.)
Back-facing Triangles
– Triangles in a model have a ‘front’ face and a ‘back’ face. The
front face is what would be seen in the real world – it’s the direction from which it was
scanned. Viewing a model with back-facing triangles on can present a sense of the whole
model, as in the left image in Figure 33, but it makes it difficult to see parts of a model that
are hidden. Turning back-facing triangles off, as in the right image, enables viewing the
interior of a scene. Note that which triangles are front-facing and which are back-facing
change as you rotate a model.

Axes
– Displays the x, y, and z coordinate axes for the model.
Model Boundary
– Displays horizontal grids above and below the data showing the extent
of the model.
Measurement Grid
– When in Orthographic View mode (described below), overlays a
measurement grid on the window which can be used for approximate measurements of the
scene. Note that the measurement grid will change scale as you zoom in or zoom out of the
model.
Model Fill Mode
– Provides three different ways to display a 3D model. Filled Triangles
are the standard viewing mode as shown in Figure 33. This uses the computer graphics
technique of texture mapping to fill the triangles with color. Wire frame shows only the
edges of the triangles, as shown in the left image of Figure 34. Points mode, in the right
image, shows only the vertices of the triangles – which correspond to a subset of the points
of the original scan. There are also simple keyboard shortcuts for these 3 view modes –
w
for wire frame,
p
for points, and
f
for fill. Hitting the key toggles the fill mode.
