Software - GUI Control Panel

Software updates will normally only affect the application software, as this has
a direct impact on the machine’s operation. There are several methods of pro-
gramming the software into the GUI CPU (see Figure 4:3).

The boot firmware and application software are stored in the flash memory.
Each time the machine is switched on, the boot firmware loads the application
software into the ‘run memory’, so that the machine can operate (see Figure
4:4). The run memory does not store information once the power is switched
off, hence the need for the flash memory.

The boot firmware is also used to install new versions of the application
software. The boot firmware can be accessed by connecting a computer via the
serial port or ethernet connection. The computer is used as a terminal and the
boot firmware gives the operator various options to choose from when
updating the application software (see Section 4.4.7).
