12.3. Using a GSM mobile phone to transfer

audio

Courier treats a GSM mobile phone in exactly the same way as an external modem,
except that the data rates for transferring data are much slower (only 9,600kbps
currently).

So, to perform a file transfer using a GSM mobile, connect the mobile phone to the
RS232 port using a connector supplied by the phone supplier.

Configure the phone number that you are using to use the [Ext. Modem] mode and
set the number, protocol and a script file as necessary.

To use your GSM phone, select [Connectivity], [File Transfer] and [Select Phone
#].

Select the telephone number and [Modem GSM] and then use [Dial] to dial the
number.

                                       

The Courier will dial the number and establish a connection in the normal way. See
Section 12.2.2.1 for further information.

Note: For firmware version 2.522a and subsequent versions.

 

The Nokia 9110

(Communicator) has been added as a modem type. To use this phone correctly,
and some other mobile devices, the Courier hardware needs to be modified. The
hardware relies on the connected device to drive an incoming line to a threshold
voltage to enable the RS232 driver chip. Either the Communicator cannot
manage this level or it too has a similar power saving feature and the Courier
and Communicator are stuck in limbo, both waiting for the other to make the
first move. This is NOT a problem with normal powered modems or with the
ISDN port. Details of the modification are available as a PDF file, but we
recommend that this work only be undertaken where connection to a mobile
phone is definitely needed and has failed.
