Chapter 8 - Using the Courier file system

8.2.1.  Formatting a disk

Formatting the disk over-writes the file allocation table (FAT) of the disk and

destroys all cuts and files on the disk

. Flash cards need to be formatted before they

can be used, but you can record on a hard disk without initially formatting it - they
are usually pre-formatted. Otherwise, formatting should only be undertaken once
you have transferred your files to another medium and wish to “clean” the disk.

There are two parts of the menu structure where the [Format Disk] command can
be carried out. The first is in the main menu in the 

Cut-List Mode

, but it only

appears if the Show Format option has been enabled in the [Setup], [Display]
menu.

The second place where the Format Disk command appears is in 

the Cut-List

Mode

, if you press the MENU button and select [Setup], [Filing] and then [Format

Disk] :

Select [Yes] to format the disk and [No] to return to the 

Cut-List Mode

.

8.2.2.  Show format command in the main 

Cut-

List Mode

 menu

This option has been enabled so that you can allow/disallow the [Format Disk]
command in the main menu of the Courier, i.e. before the password protected
[Setup] menu option.

If your users of the Courier are competent and unlikely to use the [Format Disk]
command rashly, then it would be wise to allow access to this command. If your
Courier users are not familiar with computer technology and could wipe out a
disk’s contents unknowingly, then it might be prudent to disallow the [Format Disk]
command from the main menu, so that you can password protect access to it.

In the Cut-List Mode, press the MENU button and select [Setup], [Display] and
[Show Format] :
