12.1. Connecting directly to a PC

12.1.1. Using a drive-bay

By far the fastest way of getting the recorded audio from the Courier into a PC is to
install a PCMCIA drive bay into your PC, so that disks can be removed from the
Courier and inserted directly.

Because the PCMCIA drives are hard disks or flashcards, you do not even need to
import the files or copy them onto your hard disk – you can begin to use them
straight away, provided that your editing or playback software can locate the drive.

A number of different drive-bays are available – check section 14.1.1 for more
information.

When using a “Card Port” PCMCIA drive-bay on a Windows NT PC, please note
that another PCMCIA driver must be installed to enable the drive to be used. This
is available from whoever supplied the Card Port drive-bay to you and is called
“Cardware”.

12.1.2. Using the serial connection

Alternatively, if you don’t have a PCMCIA drive-bay, you can use the supplied
Courier Configuration Manager (CCM) software to transfer data files between the
Courier and the PC. Full instructions for installing and using the CCM software are
given in Chapter 13.

12.1.3. Using the USB connection

For faster transfer you can also use the optional USB connection to transfer files
between the Courier and the PC using Windows 2000 or Windows 98 Explorer.
When the Courier is connected to the PC, it will assign a new drive letter to the
Courier making the Courier files accessible from any PC software. The drive
contents will only be accessible when the Courier is in USB Connect mode. At all
other times, even though the drive is visible, Windows will show an “insert drive”
message when any drive activity is attempted.

The first time the Courier is connected to a PC, Windows will load the Courier to
the appropriate device drivers and update the registry. For Windows 2000 a setup
information file – COUSB2000.INF on the win2000 directory of the supplied
floppy disk is used to link to the operating system supplied file USBSTOR.sys.
